Companies will pay many multiples of current dev tool budgets

Companies will absolutely pay multiples of current developer-tool budgets for AI coding tools
Legacy developer productivity tool budgets are tiny per seat per month, while the developer whose output you're multiplying costs ~$200,000 a year

Bolt on vertical ai vendors wont justify the price increase with real value
David Cahn · Aug 5, 2024
Software companies that genuinely make their product more useful with AI will have pricing power, but those injecting AI for investor and marketing optics are just adding cost with no consumer benefit and cannot charge more.
Consumers only pay more when they receive more value; the burden to deliver value in business is very high, and AI is not yet clearly meeting it.

Some vertical software vendors that have layered AI onto existing products will likely not deliver enough value to justify the incremental spend they are asking customers for
They sold a story of accelerating customers who already pay them, but the delivered value won't match the added price
Scope: "I don't think some of those solutions" — applies to a subset

Ai feature parity across competitors commoditizes pricing regardless of value added
Harry Stebbings · Jun 12, 2024
Commoditization of AI features in existing software products will yield better products for users but not value extraction in the form of increased pricing
Incumbents adding AI features like Notion AI and Box are seeing slowing growth — Salesforce and Mongo are now growing at single digits

Adding value via AI does not guarantee pricing power, because commoditisation of AI features across many providers forces a race to the bottom.
If Canva, Adobe, Sketch and ten others all offer feature parity, pricing power disappears regardless of added value.

If you can't charge significantly more for your agent product, Wall Street doesn't care; agents must reaccelerate revenue
36:48 If you cannot charge more agents do not count

You can charge significantly more for agent products, and Box's new higher plan tier bundling agents with workflow and automation is already reaccelerating its revenue growth
The agent automates work on customers' content — reading documents, extracting metadata, processing information in workflows — which justified a new premium tier and produced an inflection in revenue growth last year

AI does not change pricing power; it is determined by pre-existing barriers to entry, so if you had pricing power before AI you will after, and if you didn't you won't.
Businesses with barriers to entry such as data moats and switching costs can raise price; low-barrier sectors get bid down toward zero gross margin and structurally low-margin industries can only pass through a little of a cost increase.
22:43 Pricing power is determined by pre existing barriers to entry not by ai itself
