Young people act irresponsibly because they're not given any power; if you let people in their early twenties be their own bosses, they rise to the occasion.

All the summer groups were extraordinarily responsible, never failing to do what they promised, even though the world treats people that age as untrustworthy.

Independence is more a product of environment than most people realize, rather than mainly an innate trait.

The founders' attitudes visibly changed during the summer: emerging from twenty years of being told what to do, they grew into total freedom very quickly.

Many hackers could start successful startups: put people in a position of independence and they develop the qualities they need, whereas employment molds them into people for whom starting a startup seems impossible.

The same environmental forces work in both directions; the summer founders grew into independence quickly once given it.
