Synthetic urgency is the sellers craft

Lauren Schwartz · Oct 19, 2022

The right way to accelerate a deal is a mutual action plan built backwards from the customer's own deadline for the business outcome, so they see how long value realization takes

It accelerates the timeline without artificially discounting or cheapening the product's impact

Frank Fillmann · Mar 22, 2023

Urgency in a sales cycle can only be created through the client's lens by working backwards from their go-live date to a success plan; urgency framed around the selling firm's interest will be seen through and won't land.

Buyers see through vendor-motivated urgency, but if you back-plan from their July go-live through user testing and administration, it's evident they need to start now — and it's the seller's job, not the buyer's, to make that visible.

Scope: fiscal-year-end pricing leverage can be added, but only alongside their success plan

The ability to create synthetic urgency is the art of the great salesperson and is what is missing from most sales processes

Very few buyers genuinely need a product like HubSpot this month rather than next — there is no catastrophe forcing them

Trouble now trouble coming or hero motive

Doug Adamic · Sep 8, 2023

There are only three reasons an organization makes a purchase: they are in trouble now, they see trouble coming, or an individual or group wants to be a hero by getting ahead of something.

There are only three reasons an organization makes a purchase: they're in trouble now, they see trouble coming, or an individual or group wants to be made a hero

Deep discovery into how the business operates reveals which of these applies, and identifying it usually creates enough of a compelling event

Ben Fiechtner · Aug 2, 2024

Beyond engineering a compelling event, the most reliable way to create urgency in a deal is to find the personal win for the champion or economic buyer

If someone feels personally connected to you, the product and the success of the project, they will push internally to get it done urgently

Scope: not about asking for personal favors; compelling event / burning platform remains the most consistent lever

Mutual close plan with shared accountability

Doug Adamic · Sep 8, 2023

Deal slippage to the next quarter can be materially reduced by agreeing a close plan and timeline with the customer up front and holding both sides accountable to it

Establishing constructive tension early reveals whether the customer is just shopping or genuinely solving a problem, which creates pipeline predictability

Scope: some slippage is always going to happen; increases probability rather than guarantees

Chris Degnan · Nov 10, 2023

Urgency in a deal is created by finding the compelling event and working backwards from the customer's target date to a timeline of everything that must happen, including contracting

Contracting alone averages about three months and enterprise procurement can take six months or more, so the customer has to see what the deadline requires

Urgency cannot be manufactured by the rep; it only comes from implicating the pain by asking who and what suffers if the customer does nothing.

Once the customer has told you the consequences to their job measure and the company, you can replay it back to them and they will make time for you.

15:15 Customer voiced consequences not seller manufactured

Stevie Case · Jan 25, 2023

The nugget to anchor a deal on is usually connected to why the prospect agreed to the meeting at all, and once found it should be quantified and returned to repeatedly

People are extremely busy and nobody takes an extra meeting without something compelling behind it

29:49 The reason they agreed to meet is the anchor to return to throughout the deal

Matt Plank · Dec 20, 2024

Buyers don't sign on the last day of the quarter because they fear losing a discount — they sign because of trust and commitments built through the evaluation

It's extremely unlikely a vendor refuses the same price three days later, so the real driver is the relationship and the buyer honoring what they agreed to; without that trust, time-based discounts are counterproductive

32:12 Trust and honored commitments close the quarter

Jordan Van Horn · Aug 17, 2022

'The customer didn't feel urgency' is not a real explanation for a missed quota — it means the rep failed to understand and make real the buyer's pain and the consequences of not solving it

If you deeply understand the pain you know why they must solve it now; if you can't make that pain real for the actual decision maker, the deal slips every time

12:52 Failure to make pain real not lack of urgency explains missed quota

Dan Fougere · Nov 22, 2024

Urgency in enterprise deals is created by 'magical moments' — a demonstrated proof point where the product visibly works and the competitor's fails — not by manufactured pressure

At Capital One a Linux update took down the competing dashboards while Datadog kept working, and that moment let them ship, write it up with screenshots and escalate upward

9:11 Demonstrated proof point creates urgency

Kim Graves · Jun 27, 2025

Companies only buy for three reasons — to make more money, save costs, or mitigate risk — and for a horizontal product like Notion the 'why now' comes from pace of innovation or from working backwards from an existing software renewal to save money

SaaS sprawl means they're paying for many solutions that add up, so a renewal date is a compelling event you can work backwards from

65:02 Three buying reasons money cost risk and software renewal dates create the why now for horizontal products

Chris Degnan · Nov 10, 2023

The single most important forecasting test is whether the deal has a compelling event or ROI driving the customer to buy; a good relationship with the customer is not a reason to forecast a deal

Especially in a weak economy customers act in their own interest — their job and family — not to do a rep a favor, so absent a compelling reason the forecast is trivially poked full of holes

22:35 Compelling event or roi not relationship

Matt Rosenberg · Oct 4, 2023

Urgency is created by great discovery that quantifies the economic value of solving the problem, so every unit of delay has a known cost

If you don't know what a month of delay is worth to them, there's no reason for them to jump the procurement queue — you're playing their game

28:06 Quantified cost of delay creates urgency

Matt Rosenberg · Oct 4, 2023

You can create urgency when selling a vitamin rather than a painkiller, but it is much harder and must rest on timeline, process and budget discipline rather than economics

Without pain economics behind you, you only have an agreed timeline and process, and those slip all the time

29:18 Without pain economics urgency rests on process discipline
