Box one profitability is the right early payback constraint

Being 'box one profitable' — acquiring the customer for less than the margin on their first shipment — is the right starting constraint for a subscription box business

Otherwise you're upside down and can't make money; with credit card float you can even stretch to box two payback since you know what share of customers take a second box

Scope: was their constraint in the first year or two

A consumer hardware business should target an immediate payback period and healthy day-zero contribution margin, with subscription revenue compounding on top

Compressing contribution profit would buy ~50% more growth but leave the business not public-ready or healthy

LTV barely matters if you hold yourself to fast payback; the metric that matters is how quickly you pay back customer acquisition cost

If you're profitable by box one, two or three you've already earned back the acquisition cost and any retention beyond the three-month death zone is upside, so you don't need to forecast lifetime value

For consumer subscription apps, six-month CAC payback is good, one month is great, and first-session payback is exceptional — a far shorter bar than B2B's twelve to eighteen months

Consumer subs lack low churn and high net revenue retention, consumer attention spans are short, and over 75% of trial starts happen within twenty four hours of install, so you must convert users and recoup CAC fast
