Aes must self source a weekly baseline

Rich Liu · Jun 7, 2023 · hedged

A good rule of thumb is that an AE in enterprise software outbound should self-generate at least one new opportunity per week without help from SDRs or marketing

Self-sourcing is the hardest part of selling and the precursor to building late-stage pipe and closing deals

Scope: rule of thumb; enterprise software outbound sale

Sellers should not wait for marketing to hand them leads; they should generate pipeline themselves through cold calls, conferences and partner introductions.

Marketing may only deliver a couple of leads a quarter, so success comes from doing the hard hustle work yourself.

AEs are ultimately responsible for their own lead generation even though they should get some support, and a rep who blames missing their number on lack of leads won't make it

AEs must self-generate some pipeline even though the majority should still come from the BDR team; AEs who don't self-gen doesn't work and does them a personal disservice

Outbounding trains captivating interest and getting to the point quickly, which makes AEs better on first discovery calls even for inbound leads, and it builds appreciation for the BDR's work so they treat meetings accordingly

Scope: especially in enterprise and mid-market where prospecting is a team sport

AEs should do their own outbound and should join expecting to have no BDR support

When pipeline generation is outsourced to another role, AEs progressively raise their bar for what leads are worth working, eventually demanding near-closed opportunities and forcing enormous marketing and SDR investment

Natural tendency for salespeople to get finicky about lead quality; he has seen a company where AEs defined a qualified lead as a customer already ready to demo, quote and buy — ~80% of the sales cycle done

Whole company owns demand creation

Prospecting optional for aes when sdrs supply pipeline

Ashley Kelly · Jun 7, 2024

AEs should have the option to prospect but shouldn't need to; if SDRs deliver enough quality pipeline, an AE's time is better spent closing

She has only seen AEs prospect successfully a handful of times, and always the top AEs

Scope: prospecting should always remain an option for AEs

Matt Plank · Dec 20, 2024

Companies should avoid giving AEs their own prospecting targets for as long as possible and keep outbound owned by a dedicated SDR org

Outbound is a diagnosable funnel — accounts worked, dials, emails, call-to-connect, connect-to-demo — and when one stage breaks you can train and fix it; you can get an SDR org to run that funnel far more effectively than reps, because reps without heavy structure and focus won't consistently do the work, and managing a rep doing outbound is not the same as managing an SDR

Scope: at sufficient scale and market saturation reps will eventually have to own pipeline; reps should still care about where their pipeline comes from

Relying on account executives to generate their own pipeline is generally a losing proposition, especially in SMB

It makes no economic sense to pay a $250k rep to make cold calls when an $80k BDR can do that work well

Account managers should themselves be excellent at pipeline generation and should hunt inside their accounts, and an account manager who drives real customer value makes the account very hard for an outside hunter to crack.

Customer value builds trust, so when a new technology question arises the customer brings it to the account manager first, giving them the chance to fix or adapt the offering; PG skills also let AMs expand into other divisions.

58:04 Account managers must generate pipeline inside accounts

Akshay Kothari · Sep 18, 2024

At product-led growth companies, abundant inbound leads are both a blessing and a curse: the sales org becomes dependent on them and blames lead quality instead of going out to source demand itself.

If nobody were signing up on your website you'd still have to go find the lead, so you'd complain about lead quality less; with inbound, poor closing gets attributed to the product not sending the right leads.

15:17 Abundant inbound breeds dependency and blame shifting away from self sourcing

Julian Teixeira · Mar 7, 2025

Outbound skill — captivating interest and getting quickly to something that matters to the individual — is valuable even for teams that only take inbound calls, because it makes reps more effective in first discovery meetings.

Outbounding is fundamentally about captivating interest and relevance, which transfers to any first conversation.
