Value selling endures features stopped working

Frank Fillmann · Mar 22, 2023

Sales conversations should start from the customer's goals and empathy and reverse-engineer the product to fit, never start with the product

Aligning to the gap between a customer's long-range plan and their execution makes you a consultant rather than a vendor

Selling value is the sales tactic that hasn't changed, while leading with features and functionality has stopped working

Buyers are getting much smarter and there is so much innovation now that demoing features first no longer differentiates the way it did when innovation was rarer

20VC's go-to-market approach is the most impressive sales strategy right now because it creates value and teaches rather than selling, which is how buyers actually want to buy

By offering value and drawing people in without pitching, it makes the audience want to buy more of the products and expose their leaders to it

Scope: Sean notes it may not be intentional on 20VC's part

The thing most worth changing in sales is teams' universal ability to convey value to customers — do that and selling stops feeling like a sales game.

Conveying value changes the entire optics of selling; it reframes the interaction away from being a sales exercise.

FAB selling (feature-advantage-benefit) is dead, displaced by the proliferation of value selling frameworks.

It was the standard training he learned, but nobody is writing books on it anymore while value selling frameworks are unlimited in choice.

Selling on features and functions that aren't tied to the buyer's specific problem loses; you must speak the client's language and reframe your product around how they actually work

Leading with product and feature pitches is a dead sales tactic — no one cares about your features

The best sellers win by connecting to where the customer's business is going and selling value drivers, not by arguing feature-versus-feature against competitors

storytelling and understanding the customer's direction matter more than feature comparison

Feature led selling is the main bottleneck

Doug Adamic · Sep 8, 2023 · hedged

The biggest bottleneck to rep speed is leading with the product instead of changing the buyer's buying criteria to lead to your product

Reps get excited about features and functionality instead of diligently understanding how the prospect's company operates and where they can deliver measurable outcomes

Scope: 'at least that I have' — framed as his own experience building and training a salesforce; depends on the company

Vickie Peng · Apr 17, 2024

The two main mistakes founders make in storytelling are framing the story from their own perspective rather than the customer's, and leading with solution rather than problem.

Saying 'we do this, our company is the best, here are our features' fails to convey how the customer's life changes or whether they even resonate with the problem being solved.

Demo as customer story after discovery

Dan Fougere · Nov 22, 2024

A good demo requires discovery first and must be staged as a story in the customer's own environment and pains, not a feature walkthrough.

Like identifying with a protagonist in a novel, the buyer has to see themselves in the story and see how their life and job get better.

Kim Graves · Jun 27, 2025

In solution design, reps must connect their solution back to the specific problems heard in discovery rather than reciting everything the product solves, and should be willing to end the deal when the fit isn't there.

Discarding the research and discovery you just did wastes it; if the customer's needs are outside what you do best, honesty about parting ways is the right move.

Frank Fillmann · Mar 22, 2023

A proposal should follow a logical sequence — problem, solution, success roadmap, value, then pricing — with the value case always presented before price

Establishing economic value (cost avoidance, vendor consolidation, ROI, shareholder value) first, backed by homework like reading the 10-K and knowing how the customer is measured, removes the inhibitors that block a sale

31:19 Proposal sequence problem solution roadmap value then price

Jeetu Mahtani · Sep 27, 2024

Feature-pitching is partly founders' fault, but it stems from their hesitance to ask deeper, harder questions rather than lack of available knowledge

Resources for running a reasonable sales process are freely available and it's not rocket science; the real block is uncertainty about how prospects will react, which boards or mentors can help build confidence around

52:41 Founder hesitance to ask hard questions drives feature pitching

Guillaume Moubeche · Dec 13, 2024

Sales should be repositioned as relationship-building and helping someone solve a specific problem, which is what makes it cool

Tying the product to relationships and revenue makes the ROI easy to calculate and makes the tool the default choice for reps

15:00 Reframe sales as relationship building and problem solving not feature pitching

Kim Graves · Jun 27, 2025

The cost-savings pitch converts more easily because it's cut and dry, but it's a weaker long-term position than value realization since a competitor can make the identical savings pitch

Savings math is unambiguous, but if customers don't see value in their workflows another vendor can undercut with the same argument, so customer success must drive value

66:01 Cost savings pitches convert easily but are commoditizable value realization is the durable position
