Sequoia's practice of doing follow-on tranche rounds at the same price after an inflection is a phenomenal way to lock in ownership while funding the company

The investor gets in at one price and puts more money in at that price after value has been created, which benefits both sides

Same-price tranche rounds are rare and not a deliberate Sequoia strategy; where founders build special companies they naturally command a premium after an investment

He has only seen it happen a handful of times, and pricing is a supply and demand problem — there's no reason a founder building something special wouldn't command a higher price

It will become less common for the same investor to invest in successive rounds, because that usually means the startup isn't getting market price, and as the market becomes more efficient the investment community will become more stratified.

As the investment market becomes more efficient it gets easier for startups to get market price if they want it.
