Once you take venture money you are on a train you cannot get off, and lifestyle design is no longer available to you.
A VC is responsible for other people's money and for driving a return, so demanding a founder quit their job and go full time is legitimate — he would want the same if he handed someone a million dollars.

You do have to be all in to build a company — you cannot do it on the side
Once the second iteration needed real supply signup and online marketing, part-time effort was impossible and they had to go full time on an unproven prototype
