Are today's public tech stock prices driven by momentum detached from fundamentals or by rational sector rotation?

Market is a casino momentum ignores fundamentals

Mitchell Green · Mar 7, 2026

It is absurd that a research report from a random firm can move markets and get 25 million views while investors ignore the far more credible operators and allocators who say software is not dead.

People like Druckenmiller, Howard Marks, Ken Griffin, Steve Cohen, Benioff, Zuckerberg and Jensen Huang have vastly more standing than an anonymous research shop, and modern information velocity amplifies the noise.

Public markets are no longer rational and are a bad place to be, because they have been casino-ised

Sector rotation toward ai infrastructure not memeification

Vlad Tenev · Jul 14, 2025

Retail buying of names like CoreWeave and Circle is fundamentally different from meme coin speculation — buyers are seeking genuine exposure to industries they believe will be gigantic

Retail has very few options to get exposure to AI or stablecoins at sub-trillion valuations — Nvidia is $4T and AI is only 10-20% of the Tesla story — so CoreWeave offers AI exposure at a lower level and Circle offers clean stablecoin exposure

Scope: applies to these stocks, distinguished from meme coins

The dominant market story is sector rotation toward semis and data center buildout and away from pure licensing software, not broad memeification

Investors see higher returns closer to where AI workloads and data center capex are going and lower returns from pure software licensing

Scope: concedes some data center and infra names have also been memeified; a few one-off companies have genuinely captured the zeitgeist

Recent IPO stock prices may be driven more by scarce float and liquidity dynamics than by company fundamentals

Very little liquidity is out there and shares like ARM's are very closely held, so long-term investors trying to get liquid can move the price more than fundamentals do

47:28 Scarce float and liquidity not fundamentals drive newly public stock prices

Paul Erlanger · Jun 27, 2026

Calling retail-driven public markets a 'casino' is the wrong framing; retail coordination against institutions is empowering rather than degenerate

Hedge funds set stock values for decades; Wall Street Bets showed retail investors can coalesce and force shorts to cover, fighting back against institutions

13:05 Retail coordination is empowerment not casino

Mitchell Green · Mar 7, 2026

The casinoization of public markets is an opportunity, not a reason to stay out — long-term investors should buy when others are scared.

As Buffett said, you make money buying when people are fearful.

15:53 Casinoization is real but is an opportunity for long term buyers
